Assignment: Research (middle) This research assignment has three "layers": each completed layer is accorded a higher grade. Upper layers have options so students can complete tasks best suited to their learning styles.
Assignment: Short Story (middle) Clearly outlines the expectations for a short story oral and written report. Includes suggested short story authors. Simple and helpful.
Project: The Best Vacation Ever (upper elem/middle) This 16 page vacation planner is a great project to help students understand the process of planning and organizing a vacation. Whether plans are for a low-budget camping trip in a nearby state park, or a fantastic voyage to a faraway country, students will have fun planning budgets, etc., with this unit.
Report Form: Her Story Booklet format for students to write a short report on the individual contributions and accomplishments of a famous woman.

Rules and Practice: Rhetoric- Euphemisms (middle school) Students learn about euphemisms by example, and then are encouraged to create their own.
Unit: Writing a News Article (middle school) Includes the main elements of a news article, writing headlines, writing a lead, story sequencing, differences between fact and opinion... all the basic aspects of news writing are included in this 15 page multiple-skill unit.

A Constant Struggle (middle) This super-sized reading and writing unit introduces the basic categories of literary conflict (man vs. nature, etc.) and presents two summarized stories for students to analyze in terms of internal/external conflict. The unit incorporates vocabulary, critical thinking, and research.
Worksheet: Puns (upper elem/ middle) This lesson uses passages from Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll to introduce the concept of puns.
Writing Prompt: Add a New Cafeteria Food (middle school) Improve writing skills by focusing on the topic, audience, purpose, and form of writing. This simple persuasive writing prompt could even be turned into a class project, if students are inspired.
Writing Prompt: Describe Your Bedroom (middle school) Improve writing skills by focusing on the topic, audience, purpose, and form of writing. Students can describe their actual bedrooms, or their imaginary ideals.
